The Flip Project is a grassroots group of artists, activists, musicians, analysts, organizers, and politically engaged volunteers. We design, develop, and deploy Get Out The Vote (GOTV) tactics that are more effective than traditional canvassing.
The Flip Project (formerly known as “Flip 2020”) began with a small vagabond canvass in 2018 to Tampa Florida when we (along with hundreds of other organizations and thousands of volunteers) helped pass the Voting Rights Restoration for Felons Initiative.
Most of our 2018 team were/are artists, musicians, and activists. On the days when we weren’t doing traditional canvassing with GROUP, we’d get our artistic energy out by busking, supporting flash mobs organized by other GOTV groups, designing new posters and graphics aimed at voter education, doing street theatre, and more.
One reason we believe these tactics work so well is that silly people aren’t usually seen as scary people. Voters are more willing to talk to silly. people than scary people, or even boring people.
In the years since, we developed pandemic compliant canvassing in Maine during the 2020 General Election, then jumped into getting out the vote during the double 2020/2021 Georgia Senate runoff election which helped to shift the US Senate to a Democratic majority. Two years later, we returned to Georgia for the 2022 senate runoff election. Today in 2024, we continue our work in what may be one of the most contentious elections in living memory.
In 2020 we helped hundreds of people register to vote, thousands of people access vital voter support information, and tens of thousands of people access free rides to the polls. As part of this work, we translated and distributed voting materials for the Georgia Senate runoffs into over a dozen languages, making voting more accessible to people who speak English as a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) language. You can see more about our approach and results in the Flip Georgia 2020 Impact Report.
Today as “The Flip Project”, we work to get out the vote via education and lowering barriers to voting.
Now we’re gearing up for 2024!
